MEMORIES OF CHURCHTOWN

Mrs Buckley

I went to school in Hospital, Co Limerick with the Presentation Nuns and later went to Bruff. I liked Irish, it was my favourite subject. I can still recite the poem Cill-Cais. I still read a lot. I also liked Latin and drawing. My mother died when I was two years of age. I was reared with an aunt and I had a very good childhood with her.

When I left school I did all the usual farm work. We went to Mass on the horse and trap. There were far more cows milked in the fields in the summer in Co Limerick that in Co Cork. There were a lot of geese in nearly every farm down in our area. I remember days in the meadows. I often wonder were those days warmer than now. There were very little food items bought in those days. People were nearly self-sufficient.

Times have moved on and I am delighted to be here in Churchtown at present. It is very exciting to see all the progress taking place throughout Churchtown. I go abroad each year. I enjoy traveling. I am happy to see my family restoring the properties adjoining this house.
