I was a member of a family of ten. I went to school from my home in Annagh. I walked to school barefoot for a good part of the year. Times may have seemed tough but I was happy with my lot. Hurling took up the time then for me. I remember Jim Irwin would be a referee for our matches. Players would come from Ballyhea and Jimmy Walsh was one good hurler I remember. A few would come from Granard as well. Some of these matches would be very rough. Jim was a very strict referee, his decision, you would not question. Irwin's front field was where we played all the matches.

I always admired Tom McAuliffe as an expert at horses. He could do anything with them. He worked at Roches at that time. If it was for riding or training, Tom was the best around.
The limekiln was working in the thirties. It was in the farm where Jimmy Gordon now lives. Tim Lehane was the man who was in charge of the job. The fire would be left burning round the clock. The remains of the kiln are still intact. Lime is no longer burned. It is easier to crush the rock into powder and spread it on the land.
